Vulcan chessman
keeps on winning
Local chess impresario, Jack
Suggs, recently won the Norfolk
Chess Club's monthly
quadrangular chess tournament, topping 30 other competitors in matches held at
Wards Corner in Norfolk.
A U.S. Chess Federation candidate master, MM3 Suggs is
assigned to the Norfolk-based
repair ship, USS Vulcan.
Petty Officer Suggs said after
the win he was glad to get back
into competition after a short
lay-off.
"Of course, I'm happy with
the results of the tournament,"
he noted.
Suggs next plans to direct
Vulcan's shipboard championships and to take part in the
Naval Base competition slated
for July 30-31 on the Naval Air
Station. In 1982, he placed second in the Sea Services chess
tournament in interservice play
and is active in the promotion of
chess play on board Vulcan.
