Letter from Dr. James R. Sweeney to Interviewee, explaining intent of oral history project.

June 20, 1974

Dear ____________:

Old Dominion University is establishing an archives to provide a central location for the preservation and accessibility of all university records. I have been appointed university archivist. I will continue to teach in the Department of History on a half-time basis. President Bugg has stated that a history of the school should be written by the fiftieth anniversary in 1980, and the materials I collect will be useful for that purpose.

This summer I shall also embark upon an oral history project to record the knowledge and experiences of long-time faculty members and administrators. I would appreciate it very much if I could arrange to interview you at some time in July or August, whenever it would be most convenient for you. I would be asking you questions about your years in the .................. The interview would be tape recorded and kept by the University as a part of its Archives for the use of scholars.

It occurred to me that you might not have made any provision as yet for depositing your political and academic papers in an archives. I would be interested in discussing this matter with you as the Old Dominion University archives will contain manuscript collections as well as university records.

.......

Sincerely,
James R. Sweeney
Assistant Professor Of History
